Secretary). Example Speech Ladies and gentlemen, Much as I appreciate the honour you have paid me in coupling my name with this toast, I feel unable to accept your compliment on my own behalf alone. On occasions like this the secretary gets all the credit; but in fact this secretary deserves very little of it. The success and smooth running of the club during the season that has just ended were due to the work of the Committee of which I am only one member.

Teamwork brought the club its success on the field of play; and teamwork also was responsible for the efficient way in which the club has been run off the field. I must hasten to assure you that I am not trying to shift the blame for my own shortcomings on to the Committee.

I do not suggest that it was teamwork that caused the unfortunate misunderstanding at Easter, when we arrived at our opponents' ground at just about the same time as they arrived at ours. That was not the fault of the committee.

The blame was all mine, although I can pass a little on to the Postmaster General for really the queue was bad. On several other occasions the club had to suffer from my sins of omission and commission and I must tell you that in every case the Committee was quite blameless. For the things that went smoothly they deserve your praise, for the tragedies and disasters, blame me. I should like to add my personal support to the Chairman's praise of our captain is not only a fine player and a fine leader; he is also a fine coach.
