I HAVE SEEN HIM AT THE NETS, PUTTING THE YOUNGSTERS...

I have seen him at the nets, putting the youngsters through their paces, and I have seen him giving fielding practice to the team. I have no doubt that the improvement in our standard of match play owes a tremendous amount to the work put in by our captain in coaching and practice. In thanking you once again, therefore, I ask you to rise again and drink to the health of our captain . May he have a very long innings. REPLY TO THE TOAST OF THE CAPTAIN. Example Speech Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you for your kindness.

It should be easy for me to reply to this toast, for I have only to tell you the truth about the way our team has pulled together and the little that has been required by the captain. Unfortunately, with a rather blatant disregard for the truth, my mate the secretary has anticipated this reply, twisted it to suit his own purpose and modestly sheltered behind it in an attempt to prove that his job was equally simple. I am sure you have not been fooled; and I am sure that the other members of our hard-working Committee will agree with me when I say that the club owes more to its secretary than to any other member.

I am not so modest as the secretary and I am going to say quite brazenly that in one respect, at least, I think I have carried out thy duties of captain extraordinarily well. I must make this boast because, quite unaccountably, neither you Mr. Chairman, nor the secretary has even bothered to mention this most important triumph of mine. As you know, we have played twenty matches during the season; and I, as captain, have won the toss no less than fifteen times This I submit is a proud record.

It is the best thing I have done for the club. And I would remind you that I did it all off my own bat. It was a personal achievement that owed nothing to teamwork. Still, I am afraid it has been my only personal achievement.

Teamwork has done all the rest.

I can only say it has been a great honour to me to captain such a team, which deserves our most hearty congratulations. Thank you all. THE CHAMPION. Most clubs have their own individual championships, and at the Sports Club Dinner, he or she is usually the subject of a toast. This speech should be frankly in praise of the winner of the championship prize.

Humour is essential and the introduction of a good sporting story that has not been all round the club room will be appreciated. Example Speech Ladies and gentlemen, I am very happy to propose the health of the winner of the Cup, because only a week ago he was my companion in adversity.
